Metabolite Identification
Common NameErythrose
DescriptionErythrose belongs to the class of organic compounds known as pentoses. These are monosaccharides in which the carbohydrate moiety contains five carbon atoms. Erythrose exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, erythrose is involved in the metabolic disorder called the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency pathway. Erythrose has been detected, but not quantified in, milk (cow). This could make erythrose a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Erythrose is a primary metabolite. Primary metabolites are metabolically or physiologically essential metabolites. They are directly involved in an organism’s growth, development or reproduction. Based on a literature review a small amount of articles have been published on Erythrose.
