DescriptionZinc (II) ion, also known as ZN2+ or zinc ion, belongs to the class of inorganic compounds known as homogeneous transition metal compounds. These are inorganic compounds containing only metal atoms, with the largest atom being a transition metal atom. Zinc (II) ion is possibly neutral. It is known by the symbol Zn. Zinc (II) ion exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, zinc (II) ion is involved in dipyridamole (antiplatelet) action pathway. Zinc binds to carbonic anhydrase in erythrocytes, and to albumin, α2-macroglobulin, and amino acids in the the plasma. Unbalanced levels of copper and zinc binding to Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase have been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Outside of the human body, Zinc (II) ion has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as common walnuts, lovages, wasabis, common grapes, and groundcherries. This could make zinc (II) ion a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Zinc (II) ion is a potentially toxic compound. A metallic element of atomic number 30 and atomic weight 65.38.
