Common NameLactitol
DescriptionLactitol is found in herbs and spices. Artificial sweetener used in foods. Sweetness 0.4 x sucrose.Lactitol is a sugar alcohol used as a replacement bulk sweetener for low calorie foods with approximately 40% of the sweetness of sugar. Lactitol is produced by two manufacturers, Danisco and Purac Biochem. Lactitol has been shown to exhibit antibiotic, laxative and prebiotic functions (PMID 8913707 , 2792176 , 19351047 ).

Chemical Taxonomy
Description belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty acyl glycosides of mono- and disaccharides. Fatty acyl glycosides of mono- and disaccharides are compounds composed of a mono- or disaccharide moiety linked to one hydroxyl group of a fatty alcohol or of a phosphorylated alcohol (phosphoprenols), a hydroxy fatty acid or to one carboxyl group of a fatty acid (ester linkage) or to an amino alcohol.
