DescriptionL-Proline, also known as L-prolin, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as proline and derivatives. Proline and derivatives are compounds containing proline or a derivative thereof resulting from reaction of proline at the amino group or the carboxy group, or from the replacement of any hydrogen of glycine by a heteroatom. It is an essential component of collagen and is important for proper functioning of joints and tendons. L-Proline is a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). L-Proline exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Within humans, L-proline participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, L-proline can be biosynthesized from 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid through the action of the enzyme proline dehydrogenase 1, mitochondrial. In addition, L-proline can be converted into 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid; which is mediated by the enzyme pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase 2. L-Proline is the only one of the twenty DNA-encoded amino acids which has a secondary amino group alpha to the carboxyl group. In humans, L-proline is involved in the metabolic disorder called hyperornithinemia with gyrate atrophy (hoga). L-Proline is an odorless tasting compound. Outside of the human body, L-Proline is found, on average, in the highest concentration within a few different foods, such as gelatins, caseins, and gelatin desserts and in a lower concentration in common walnuts, frozen yogurts, and greater sturgeons. L-Proline has also been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as pomes, dandelions, beans, roman camomiles, and climbing beans. This could make L-proline a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. It also helps maintain and strengthen heart muscles. L-Proline is a potentially toxic compound. Pyrrolidine in which the pro-S hydrogen at position 2 is substituted by a carboxylic acid group.
